Our volunteers are an integral part of Ushaw life; their contribution to the organisation is immeasurable and we value and celebrate their participation and commitment.  Volunteer opportunities are open to all and we welcome enquiries from anyone interested in joining our volunteer team, irrespective of the time you can commit each month.

How can you become involved?

  • Help to resource the opening of the building and grounds for the public’s enjoyment.

  • Share the College’s extraordinary history and treasures from the College’s origins in Douai, France.

  • Assist in delivering the diverse cultural programme of events; from theatre performances, lectures and poetry, to a plethora of music events and exhibitions.

  • Support the commercial and clerical functions of the organisation.

Volunteer roles currently available

Ushaw offers a broad range of high quality volunteer opportunities; the principal roles are:


Our Welcomers are the public face of Ushaw and are the frontline ambassadors of the organisation.  It is a key role to ensure our visitors have an unforgettable experience from the outset of their time with us.


Stewards provide a vital link between the visitors’ initial welcome and their enjoyment of Ushaw’s chapels and exhibition spaces, sharing more detailed information in relation to Ushaw’s open spaces and the various exhibitions.

Tour Guides

Our Tour Guides lead groups of visitors around the house and chapel spaces providing insightful glimpses into Ushaw’s past, providing information in relation to its buildings, architecture, collections and sharing stories about the working life of the College and its alumni.

Shop Assistant

A dynamic role offering a range of tasks to support the gift shop’s operations, from engaging with customers and processing sales transactions, to maintaining a high standard of visual merchandising throughout the shop.

Clerical Support—Front of House

The Clerical Support role is a centralised function principally designed to respond to general enquiries from the public at the point of contact, either in person or on the telephone, and to direct our visitors to members of staff, meeting rooms, accommodation, conferences and events, as required.

Gardening Team

Ushaw has four acres of formal gardens which is a source of pleasure and inspiration to thousands of visitors each year.  The gardens are an integral part of the history of the College with an abundance of rhododendrons, trees, shrubs and wild flowers, and we need your help to maintain them.

Volunteer selection process

We require dependable people who support Ushaw’s vision and values and want to work as part of a committed team to engage the public in Ushaw’s heritage and cultural programme.  We require high standards of customer service and our volunteers need to be friendly, respectful and proactive in providing the best possible visitor experience.

We recruit and select our volunteers using the following process:

Step 1 Application form

Step 2 Attend an informal face-to-face meeting

Step 3 References are requested

Step 4 Start date agreed

Step 5 Induction and settling-in period

Step 6 Review meeting

What are the benefits of volunteering at Ushaw?

Frequently asked questions

How old do I have to be to volunteer at Ushaw?

You must be 18 years or over to volunteer.

Does Ushaw pay expenses?

No.  We are currently unable to pay transport, subsistence or childcare costs.

Do volunteers have to commit to a certain number of hours?

No. We welcome applications irrespective of the time you can give, and we will agree the hours prior to your start date.  Similarly, existing hours can be adjusted accordingly to your change in your circumstances.

What checks are required for the volunteer roles?

Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) checks are not required for any of the current volunteer roles at Ushaw.  Two satisfactory independent references are necessary before a start date is agreed.

Do I require any experience to volunteer?

No.  Our volunteers are fully supported in their roles and receive a corporate induction and full training.
