Like with choral music, theatre has always been a feature of life at Ushaw, since its inception in 1808, with the men of the seminary being avid supporters of the performing arts. We want to bring together local people interested in performing and supporting theatrical productions in our wonderful Gothic theatre, and create a theatre company for a new age of performance at Ushaw.

A Long History

In the past, the residents of Ushaw's seminary and school tread the boards with performances from well known playwrights, such as Shakespeare and T S Elliott. Not only were performances fun and well liked, many of the Professors and students wrote and performed their own plays. It is this environment of culture and development that we wish to recreate at Ushaw, with the help of our local community.

Theatre for the Community

The new group, made up of any who wish to take part, will have the benefit of an experienced Director, and with him/her we will be eager to establish the groups own ambitions and ways of performing. Ushaw will support the group in putting on two productions each year, holding workshops on performances and learning more about the theatrical world you will have a part in creating. Practices will be held in the Theatre at Ushaw, on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.15pm. Weekly subs £2.50.
