Ushaw Chapel Choir

Ushaw has a tradition of choral singing going back over 200 years, and regularly houses choral performances as part of the events program. As part of our ongoing development, the choir came together in 2017 to perform in our beautiful St Cuthbert's Chapel, and to revive and renew the musical tradition at Ushaw.

The Choir

Our group of around 35 enthusiastic and committed singers performs at various musical events within our programme, leads a service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas, and sings Vespers twice a year in the glorious surroundings of St Cuthbert's Chapel. Our members have a wide variety of experience - some have performed professionally while others have little or no choral experience at all.

Rehearsals

The choir meets on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.15pm in the theatre. Weekly subs are £2.50. Our expert conductor, Alex Chisholm-Loxley, is accompanied by the hugely experienced Allan Coombes, the wonderful organist at St Margaret's Durham, who has performed several times to audiences here at Ushaw with great success.

The Choir is a friendly and welcoming group which also meets once a month for a post-rehearsal social occasion, at which all members are most welcome.

Conductor Alex Chisholm-Loxley

Alex Chisholm-Loxley is a piano teacher, performer, and choral singer. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA in music, Alex went on to teach piano briefly at Westonbirt School before moving on to tutoring with Your Space Music Lessons. Also a passionate choral singer, Alex has sung tenor with the Durham Cathedral Consort of Singers, and has performed with Gabrieli as part of the 2011 Proms, and was part of a performance of Sir Karl Jenkins's The Armed Man in Berlin to commemorate the centenary of the 1918 armistice.
