Ushaw Jazz Festival 2017

Friday 25th August - Sunday 27th August



The inaugural Ushaw Jazz Festival in 2016 was a great success. Audiences came from around the UK for a weekend of outstanding music celebrating the rich diversity of jazz and improvised music in the uniquely beautiful setting of Ushaw. Over the August bank holiday weekend in 2017 the Ushaw Jazz Festival returns! Featuring the Buck Clayton Legacy Band (led by Alyn Shipton and including the ever popular and hugely talented Alan Barnes) Emma Fisk and James Birkett, Chris Sharkey Trio, Tom Sharp Big Band (winners of the 2016 Great North Big Band Jazz Festival), Paul Edis Sextet, Francis Tulip Band, Early Bird Band, you can also expect talks, an artist in residence, food and drink and a weekend full of great music in an amazing location.  


Friday 25th August:


Early Bird Band - 6pm

Led by well-known Jazz musician Paul Edis, this band, made up of the rising starts of youth jazz musicians, is performing with skill beyond their years. Alumni of this great local band going on to do great things in the musical industry. Perhaps the finest start to a weekend of Jazz, this free performance is not to be missed.

Paul Edis Sextet - 8pm

Led by a ‘brilliant young pianist’ (Alyn Shipton, The Guardian) the Paul Edis Sextet is steeped in the straight-ahead tradition, but with an original and contemporary edge. With a front line of trumpet, tenor sax and trombone, the sound of this talented group is reminiscent of the great Art Blakey ensemble, with roots in the early 1960s Jazz scene. With some intricate arrangements, solid grooves and exquisite melodies, Paul Edis has wowed audiences and critics alike with performances to date. A good way to round off the first day of our Jazz festival with style and flare. Tickets £8

Saturday 26th August:


Emma Fisk and James Birkett - 1pm

The critically acclaimed duo, channelling vibes of Reinhardt and Grappelli, have performed in some of the Regions finest Jazz venues. Preparing material for an album, they are sure to perform both new and old songs as part of their performance in the grounds of Ushaw. Don’t miss a chance to see this pair, before their albums fly off the shelves. Tickets £8

Francis Tulip Band - 4pm

Who hasn’t heard of this renowned North east youngster, alumni of the Early Bird Band and incredible guitarist, Francis Tulip. Backed by his equally skilled band, Francis is bound to have you on your feet with music inspired by Coltrane and Shorter. Come along and see another rising jazz star with a big future. Tickets £5

Graeme Wilson and Paul Edis: The Music of T.S. Monk - 6pm

Performing the music of T.S. Monk, and described as a duo to be contenders for ‘gig of the year’ by Bebop Spoken Here, pianist Paul Edis and Saxophonist Graeme Wilson team up to provide a relaxing afternoon of smooth jazz. For both fans of Monk and those who have never experienced his music, this pair will surely provide the best introduction to such great jazz. Tickets £5

The Buck Clayton Legacy Band and 'Lady J' - 8pm

Fancy listening to the legacy of a brilliant trumpeter, who played alongside Billie Holiday for many years? What about the smooth vocals of the mysterious ‘Lady J’, one of the UK’s foremost Holiday interpreters? If a treasure trove of well written and expertly performed music from the golden era of Jazz sounds like your thing, come and see this wonderful group for just £10!

Jam Session with Paul Edis Trio - 10:15pm

Back again with wonderful music, Paul Edis teams up with two other great performers to provide you with a free, late night, improvised jam session. A mixture of styles and sounds to be expected, with the only chance to hear some of the group’s music presenting itself at Ushaw. Tickets FREE

Sunday 27th August:

           

Chris Sharkey Trio - 1pm

Why don’t you come along and listen to another phenomenal jazz guitarist, Chris Starkey, whose internationally recognised skill will have you on your feet from the moment he starts. Reviewed as ‘the cutting-edge’ of improvised Jazz guitar technique, Chris Starkey is sure to provide a good start to the last day of out Jazz festival. Tickets £8

Jazz Workshop with Paul Edis - 3-4.30pm

Play an instrument? Love Jazz? Paul Edis will be providing you with the chance to play in a collaborative composition and improvisation workshop leading to a short performance as part of the Ushaw Jazz Festival 2017. Tom Sharp Jazz Orchestra - 6pm

Support another young group as the Tom Sharp Jazz Orchestra comes to Ushaw. Intended as a band for the finest alumni of the Leeds College of Music, the orchestra plays music from the 40s and 50s, offering you a slice of professional performance by a new generation of musicians. A brilliant way to end a weekend of Jazz. Tickets £10
