Ushaw Choir

Ushaw has a tradition of choral singing going back over 200 years, and regularly houses choral performances as part of its events program. As part of our ongoing development, a new Ushaw Choir is being developed to perform in our illustrious St. Cuthbert's Chapel.

A New Choir

A new choir is being established to revive and renew the musical tradition at Ushaw, with hopes to have about 35 singers to perform at various events within our program of performances, as well as Vespers three times a year in the glorious Chapel, leading carols at Christmas, performing a major choral work at Easter and concluding with a lighter summer concert in June in the superb Gothic Theatre.

The choir will meet Thursday evenings from 7.30pm. to 9.15pm. Our expert conductor, Alex Chisholm-Loxley, recent graduate from Leeds College of Music, and says “This is a really exciting idea, and we will be supporting the wonderful programme of cultural events at Ushaw".

The choir will be accompanied by the hugely experienced Allan Coombes, the wonderful organist at St Margaret’s Durham, who has performed several times to audiences here at Ushaw - with huge popularity. The practices will be in the Theatre. There will be no auditions; all that is required is enthusiasm, the ability to sing in tune and be a committed part of a team. Weekly subs at £2.50. First practice will be sometime in September (check back for more details).

Conductor Alex Chisholm-Loxley

Alex Chisholm-Loxley is a piano teacher, performer, and choral singer. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA music degree, Alex went on to teach piano briefly at Westonbrit School before moving on to tutoring with Your Space Music Lessons. Also a passionate choral singer, Alex has sung tenor with the Durham Cathedral Consort of Singers, and has performed with Gabrieli's as part of the 2011 Proms. Most recently, of course, Alex has become the expert conductor of the Ushaw choir. We can expect to hear hymns such as In The Bleak Midwinter, Wassail, and Hymn to the Virgin in the first performances around Christmas.
